The Community Reconciliation and Development (CRD) Program sought to promote community reconciliation while addressing immediate development needs in five targeted areas of Tajikistan working through local NGO and CBO partners. The program helped communities and CBOs focus on problems of common interest and develop strategies and community development projects that address those problems considered most critical. During the CRD program, Counterpart teamed up with four local NGOs to work in dozens of communities in the remotest parts of Tajikistan. In difficult places like the Karategeen Valley, the Ferghana Valley and Gorno-Badakhshan local NGOs helped communities to identify and prioritize their own problems, problems that often led to conflict. Counterpart awarded 26 community action grants totaling $105,000 to address problems such as repaired schools, laid pipeline for potable water supplies, repaired and built drainage water systems. Some projects extended across borders. All were successfully implemented by March 2002.
