Sustainable tourism is crucial for the socio-cultural, environmental, and economic development of the small island nations (Fiji, Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, etc.) of the Pacific. Counterpart, FSP Fiji and Fijian Shangri-la Resort are spearheading sustainable tourism activities, focusing on coral reef-based tourism to establish a marine park; developing reef tours and snorkeling trails; distribute coral reef educational materials to hotel guests; and train local youth as reef wardens / ecotour guides. The Shangri-la Resort is also developing an environmental trust fund from tourist entry fees into the marine park for long-term conservation of Fiji's coral reefs. Given the geographic isolation of Pacific Island Nations, affordable ICT services are urgently needed to provide access to tourism markets, distance learning and networking. Counterpart works in this area with Foundation for the Peoples of the South Pacific, European Union, EarthVoice UN, Packard and MacArthur Foundations, Shangri-La Resorts and Ministries of Tourism.
