Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) and Natural Resource Mapping Project for Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and the Golfo de Fonseca

Location  Central America

Performance period  December 2000 - February 2002

Partner  Research Planning, Inc.

Budget  $440,573

Donor/Client  USAID

Contract  50ABNC100049 and 43ABNC107778

As part of Hurricane Mitch relief efforts, and under contract through NOAA (funded under the USAID Hurricane Mitch US Relief Effort) RPI developed maps and digital databases of the natural resources for the entire coastline of Honduras including the Bay Islands (94 maps), Guatemala (20 maps, entire Caribbean coastline and part of the Pacific coastline), and the Golfo de Fonseca (7 maps for El Salvador, 19 maps for Honduras, and 14 maps for Nicaragua). The Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) and resource atlases were developed to support environmental planning and management applications including impact assessments. Natural resource types covered included marine and coastal habitats such as mangrove forests, coral reefs, and seagrass beds; biological resources such as threatened and endangered species, fish spawning aggregations and nursery areas, marine mammal calving grounds, sea turtle nesting areas, and seabird nesting sites; and various human-use resources including fisheries harvest areas, archaeological and historic sites, and recreational sites. The project included: shoreline and coastal habitat mapping (through overflights, interpretation of aerial photography, field verification, and remotely sensed data) and compilation of all existing biological and socioeconomic information in the coastal zone area. Interaction with government agencies, NGOs and university experts in each country was an integral component of the project. The deliverables included both hardcopy and digital products (ArcInfo and ArcView) and were produced in both Spanish, and at a scale of 1:50,000.
