Dr. Roberto Castro received his Ph.D. in Economics from North Carolina State University. He specializes in microfinance, rural finance, business development, food security and food aid, non-traditional agricultural export promotion, program evaluation and policy reform. He has over ten years experience in microfinance development, as the most recent experience of the team leader for the Microfinance Program in Guatemala. Dr. Castro is also experienced in agricultural policy reform, agricultural export promotion, market-led product development for microentrepreneurs and environmental resource development. As an officer in USAID, he worked in the Microenterprise Development Office of the USAID/Global Bureau both as a senior microfinance and private sector officer, and in the USAID/Science & Technology Bureau as a senior agricultural economist. During his experience in USAID, he had field working experience in Guatemala as an agricultural policy specialist, and in the Dominican Republic and the Rural Development Office of the USAID/Latin American Bureau as project manager of a wide array of projects and programs from financial and policy reform to natural resource, business administration, appropriate technology and agroindustry. Prior to his involvement in USAID, he worked as advisor to the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources in Honduras in Central America and as Agrarian
Reform Specialist in Peru, South America.
