Coastal hazards include chronic and episodic events that can be both natural and man-made and threaten the health of coastal ecosystems and communities. Hazards can include, but are not limited to, hurricanes, tsunamis, erosion, oil spills, harmful algal blooms, and pollution. Coastal Hazard Mitigation efforts include any action taken to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk to human life and coastal property. Mitigation planning and activities work to reduce the environmental, social, and economic impacts from coastal hazards by providing information and tools that facilitate increased decision-support capabilities for individuals, organizations and governmental units associated with coastal zones.
