Sustainable tourism, as defined by the World Tourism Organization, meets the needs of tourists and host regions while protecting and enhancing opportunities for the future. Its goal is the management of all resources in such a way that economic, social and aesthetic needs can be fulfilled while maintaining cultural integrity, essential ecological processes, biological diversity and life support systems. Sustainable tourism is developed in consultation with local communities, businesses and other stakeholders in a way that is fair and equitable for host communities, achieves long term economic sustainability, and avoids damage to tourist attractions or the physical environment. Sustainable tourism practices are applicable to all forms of tourism in all types of destinations - including mass tourism and the various niche tourism segments - and result in high quality, diverse experiences for tourists in both the mainstream and specialist markets.
