There are three types of drinking water wells: dug, driven, and drilled. Proper well construction and continued maintenance are keys to the safety of a well's water supply. A well should be located so that rainwater flows away from it, because rainwater can pick up harmful bacteria and chemicals on the land’s surface. Many efforts are required to maintain safe and productive wells which include, minimizing the use of fertilizers and pesticides, reducing erosion, and preventing surface water runoff.
