Post-disaster assessment focuses on collecting and reporting information to relay the scope and severity of the humanitarian situation to those with the capacity to respond to the crisis. The two main types of assessment – situation assessment, a description of what has happened, and needs assessment, a statement of what needs to be done – capture and communicate the needs of the people and communities affected by the disaster. Early assessment is crucial to restoring life-necessities such as the drinking water supply and sanitation and helps save lives by minimizing injury damage and loss, preventing escalation, preventing secondary hazards, and informing people how they individually can react in the aftermath of a disaster to mitigate the damage to themselves and others.
